Stock Bridge c. June 1997 When the Denver, Salt Lake and Pacific Railroad reached Steamboat in 1908, cattle ranching became the economic engine driving the growth of Steamboat Springs. To keep pace with the demand for the region's prized beef, stockyards were constructed near the railroad depot. A stock bridge was also built to safely move cattle--coming off the trail--across the seasonally high and swift waters of the Yampa River. The Yampa River Core Trail Bridge is located at the stock bridge site today.
