John "Doc" Utterback
c. 1940s
John "Doc" Utterback in his military uniform. Doc Utterback (1907-1996) came to Steamboat with his parents when he was 10 months old. He worked on his family's ranch all through school, and saved enough money (by raising 50 pigs) to attend Colorado State College in Fort Collins in 1929. He graduated in 1934 with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. While at college, he met Doris Evangeline Simmons, and they married in 1939, though they later divorced. Utterback was drafted into the Army as a second lieutenant in the cavalry in 1941. He returned to Steamboat in 1946 and started his veterinary practice full time. He was elected County Commisioner in 1970, and was in office for 8 years. Description of image: a man posing in his military uniform.
